5 Ways to Tell if It’s Perimenopause (and Not Just Stress, Aging, or Burnout)

It can be really hard to tell where “normal life stuff” ends and perimenopause begins. Stress, aging, burnout, they can all look and feel a lot like hormonal shifts. For me, the lines blurred big time in my 40s. I wondered if I was just burned out from a high energy fitness career, adjusting to maturing kids, or dealing with the fallout of COVID. The reality? All of that was true and I was in perimenopause (and maybe just a little bit of denial!)

Here are five signs that it might not be “just life” and how you can start to tell the difference.

1. Your cycle starts changing in ways that feel “off.”

I’d always had light and predictable periods; Aunt Flo was good to me. Then I’d have “teaser” months where I’d get all the signs she was coming…. I’d prepare, and then she wouldn’t show up! (like an inconsiderate houseguest!) Other times, the flood gates would open with a vengeance. My cycles became so heavy I felt like I couldn’t leave the house or let alone sit on my cream couch.  Have you felt like you were on that same rollercoaster of unpredictability? It kinda sucks.

Stress can throw off a cycle here and there, but perimenopause often brings progressive changes that evolve over time: heavier flow, shorter cycles, skipped months, or periods that show up unpredictably.

👉 If your period is going rogue, that’s one of the clearest early signs of perimenopause.

2. Your sleep feels broken (and it’s not just late-night scrolling).

Stress & anxiety can cause sleepless nights, but perimenopause often adds a hormonal edge: hot flashes, night sweats, early waking, and that frustrating wired-but-tired anxious & spinny feeling.

I’ll never forget waking up at 3 a.m., heart racing, mind spinning about my 19-year-old rock climbing in Croatia, so far away. Yes, the fear was real, but the truth was, I’d always slept like a rock and being wakeful was new to me. More and more often, I was staring at the ceiling wide awake, often full of anxiety but other nights, not anxious, just simply very awake (and wishing my gym opened earlier than 6am!). Have you been part of the 3am club?

👉 If you’re finding yourself awake for no clear reason, and it’s happening often, your hormones might be part of the picture.

3. Your mood shifts feel bigger than a bad day at work.

In my mid-40s, I started to notice I wasn’t bouncing back emotionally the way I used to. Low mood, listless energy, not enjoying the things I once loved, at first, I chalked it up to an emptying nest and career burnout. And yes, those factors mattered. But at the same time, my hormones were shifting, and anxiety, sadness and self-doubt started creeping in where they had never lived before. Have you felt more sensitive or reactive to things you could have let roll before?

Burnout often feels flat, like the color drains out of life. Perimenopause mood changes, on the other hand, can feel more like a rollercoaster, irritability, sudden anxiety, or emotional swings that come out of nowhere. Talking to many women at this age and stage, the “meno-rage” is a real thing and can feel scary to you and your loved ones.

👉 If your emotions are unpredictable or feel out of proportion, it might be more than “just stress.”

4. Your body feels different in ways stress alone doesn’t explain.

I noticed workouts were harder and left me drained instead of energized. The joy I used to get from exercise just wasn’t there. On top of that, my body composition was shifting, more weight around my midsection, persistent achy knees, and changes in my skin (hello dry and oh-so itchy skin!), hair and even appetite. Has your own body felt foreign to you lately?

Lifestyle and aging definitely play a role in how our bodies change, but these shifts are also classic signs of hormonal changes.

👉 If your body feels like it’s “acting differently” despite you doing the same things, perimenopause could be the reason.

5. The “small stuff” feels harder to manage.

Brain fog, forgetfulness, trouble focusing, in the early days, I brushed it off as pandemic brain, too many things on my plate or trying to learn new skills. But when it kept happening, I realized hormones were amplifying it. Ever been mid-story and completely blank on the name of someone you know well? Awkward, right?

Stress can make anyone distracted, but perimenopausal brain fog tends to linger and interfere with daily life in a way that feels new. Many women start to worry that they are entering early dementia, truly, it is unsettling to feel like you can’t trust your mind.

👉 If you’re constantly losing your train of thought, it’s not just you, your brain is feeling the hormone shifts too.

Conclusion:

Here’s the tricky part: perimenopause symptoms creep in gradually and often overlap with stress, aging, or life transitions. Some women will tick off every box on a symptom list, while about 20% will breeze through with no symptoms at all (lucky duckies!). We don’t want to go symptom mining or medicalizing our experience, yet, a sense of “not being alone” and sharing the experience with others can go a long way in normalizing our experience.

✨ If more than one of these signs is stacking up for you, it’s worth considering that your body may be shifting into perimenopause. The good news? You don’t have to just “grin and bear it.” With the right habits and support, you can feel strong, radiant, and thriving again.
